My first intention was to name the painting “Blue painting”, as I exaggerated the presence of the blue hues in the painting. Perhaps it ended up mirroring my nostalgic longing for the home country, particularly acute in the winter months. When winter comes to Vancouver, I always miss the abundance of snow and the sun that I had in Russia . I combined two pictures from a magazine and painted the “snow dogs”. I want the viewer to guess what the title means, since there is not a simple message in the painting.

The motivation behind this painting takes its roots in a particular story. My friend’s husband, who collects photographs, once showed me a picture of a church at winter and said that it was impossible to create a painting based on the photo which would evoke same feelings and emotions as that photo. I saw this as a challenge, and hope I proved him wrong.
